WHAT PARKERS SAY ABOUT THE HONDA CRV
SUMMARY
Honda recognises the fact that most people want an off-roader because
it gives them a better view of the road, and if the weather turns
bad it will cope with slippery conditions. They also want it to look
more interesting than a humdrum saloon and the CR-V fits the bill
perfectly. Honda haven't wasted any time or money developing a car
that can cope with the Yukon trail when it only needs to cope with
the odd grass verge but it has all the ability it's likely to need
and some thoughtful touches to boot.
PERFORMANCE
The diesel was a long time coming, but well worth it. It went on sale
in early 2005 and behaves like a petrol engine (many driver's can
tell little difference). It's rev-happy in character, plus it's smooth,
refined and returns a good fuel consumption figure.
HANDLING
Light, precise electrically-assisted steering is great for town driving
but feels a bit vague on the open road. CR-V is sprightly for its
size. The difference between the CR-V and its nearest mud-plugging
rivals is that Honda does not claim that it's a fully fledged off-roader.
All models have 4x4 'on-demand' - meaning that the four-wheel-drive
system becomes active when the wheels sense slippery conditions.
COMFORT
Room for two in the back, but you can squeeze in three. Lots of room
up front and good, cosseting seats. It's quite refined on the motorway,
although there is a little wind noise because of the height.
PRACTICALITY
Some models have a dash-mounted coolbox (which can also get warm)
- ideal for snacks and drinks. A table between the driver and front
passenger has cupholders and dividers and can be folded away when
it's not in use. Plenty of room up front and a reasonable amount of
luggage space.
EQUIPMENT
SE has air-conditioning, ABS with electronic brake distribution, driver,
passenger and side airbags, electric front and rear windows, electric
mirrors, immobiliser, remote central locking, five three-point seatbelts
and a radio/CD player. SE Sport adds climate control in place of air-conditioning,
an electric sunroof, headlight washers, colour-coded bumpers and a
hard spare wheel cover.
BEHIND THE WHEEL
Good seating position with good forward view. Steering wheel adjusts
for reach. Backward view is restricted by the middle rear headrest,
although large mirrors partially make up for this. Big chunky ventilation
switches click reassuringly into place.
SAFETY
One of the safest 4x4s around, with a four-star Euro NCAP crash test
rating. All modern safety features including front and side airbags,
plus three-point seatbelts front and rear. One of the safest 4x4s
around.
RELIABILITY
A good finish to the interior with a pleasing mix of materials and
textures. It's screwed together well and Honda's legendary reliability
remains intact - we've not heard of one problem since its launch in
2001.
ABOUT WN05 OFV
This particular HONDA CR-V is a
SPORT [SAT NAV] model in 2.2 I-CTDI Diesel format. It is a One Owner,
05 Plate car first registered on 21st June 2005 making it just three
years old. Until 2005 CR-Vs were only available with a petrol engine
however in response to market demand Honda began to produce the CR-V
in diesel format and WN05 OFV is one such car fitted with Honda's
superb 2.2 I-CTDI 138bhp Diesel engine coupled to a 6 Speed Manual
Gearbox. WN05 OFV has covered an above average mileage of 109,950
but it comes with a FULL HONDA SERVICE HISTORY the most recent at
107,215 miles in May 2008 when in addition to the service both the
front and rear brake discs and pads were replaced. In addition this
CR-V has just had 4 brand new tyres fitted. The condition of this
car is simply stunning, thanks to the full Honda history it drives
beautifully and without looking at the odometer you would have no
idea of the mileage.
Honda
have made the CR-V an extremely practical car with numerous neat and
useful touches such as a fold away table/cup holder section between
the front seats and a cool box located in the centre of the dashboard.
Front seat passengers get their own individual arm rest too. The CR-V
will comfortably seat 4 or 5 adults with excellent front and rear
legroom and head height. Access into both the front and rear is very
good making tasks like straping a child into their seat a refreshingly
easy process. There are of course five 3-point safety belts so that
all occupants are properly restrained and in the unfortunate event
of an accident there are both front, side and curtain airbags to ensure
that all passengers are kept from harm.
Continuing with ease of use the tailgate opens in its entirely and
is held by a strong gas strut preventing the door from blowing back
whilst trying to load or unload and when you just need to throw a
couple of small items in the glass section of the tailgate opens separately
from the rest making access very quick and easy. The boot is cavernous
and easily capable of carrying an entire family's luggage with room
to spare.
SAT NAV is only standard on the Executive model and there are very
few other CV-R derivatives that have this fitted, however this is
one such vehicle and the first thing you will notice inside the car
is the colour screen in the centre console which flips forwards to
reveal a CD tuner. The SPORT model also benefits from a charcoal sports
cloth interior, the rear seats can be reclined or folded fowards and
the front seats have individual armrests. There is also air conditioning
including an air conditioned cool box, steering mounted controls for
the audio system and cruise control, four electric windows, electric
heated mirrors, storage and cupholders galore and external features
such as alloy wheels, front foglights, headlight washers, body coloured
bumpers.....the list goes on. In addition to the standard SPORT [SAT
NAV] specification WN05 OFV benefits from a Honda single electric
towbar.
The CR-V is of course a 4x4 without being a traditional off-roader
which means it is designed for life on the road but will perform if
asked to off road.
The 2.2 I-CTDI diesel engine produces superb torque (340NM) which
means this car will progress very swiftly if required. Indeed 0-60mph
can be dealt with in just 10.3 seconds which for a large 4x4 is excellent
performance. Being diesel means the longterm fuel savings over the
equivalent petrol CR-V are phenominal. On the motorway at normal speeds
this car will do 500 miles on a tank of diesel thanks to the 6 Speed
Gearbox. A further benefit of the Diesel engine is that with emissions
of 177g/km this CR-V costs just £170 a year to tax which for a vehicle
of this size is excellent.
Condition wise WN05 OFV is stunning.
